Designer Perfume To Match Your Designer Clothes

Posted on January 3rd, 2008 under Celebrity

At Dress N Impress we stock the highest quality designer clothes for you to (as the name would sugges) Dress.. and Impress. But to further impress, you don’t just want to look good, you want to smell amazing too, and for that reason you may want to look into exclusive designer perfumes.

Now, by ‘designer perfumes’ I dont mean Beyonce’s latest fragrance, and certainly not Victoria Beckham’s - as a general rule of thumb, if you can buy it in Boots then it isnt a designer brand.

Recently I discovered a small and very exclusive perfumery in London called Ormonde Jayne who create perfumes with such exotic fragrances that they are intoxicating to the nose, and.. well.. pretty much everywhere else too.

Ormonde Jayne make perfumes using exclusive materials not generally found in other perfumes, indeed many people laughed at Linda Pilkington (founder and creator) when some of her initial concoctions were suggested, however she proved all the skeptics wrong and came up with fragrances second to none.

Ormonde Jayne aren’t just another brand that you can buy everywhere, currently there are only two places in the world where you can buy Ormonde Jayne perfumes, either in the London perfume shop, or from their online perfume shop.

There is rumour of a new shop opening in New York soon but this has yet to be confirmed, either way - you will not go to a party and find someone else wearing one of these perfumes like you would with an Armini or Hilfigger, they breathe luxury, and scream individuality.

Ormonde Jayne have been hailed by many perfume critics since becoming fully established as the next big thing in the perfume world, indeed they were featured just last year in both Wallpaper and Tattler magazines respectively and have been making some serious waves.

Sofia Coppola, Selma Blair and the rest of his A-list pals packed the front row to see his latest offering. Cosy furry bonnets, ’skating’ boots and woolly ribbed tights had a wholesome vintage American feel .

The Origins of The Infamous Hoodie

Posted on November 2nd, 2007 under Fashion Clothing

The ‘Hoodie’ has been around for years now, referring to the hooded jumper seen so often these days, particularly in the UK. In recent times however, it has gone from strength to strength, becoming an extremely fashionable item to have, though not always smiled up on by everyone.

In California the trend differs slightly, the hoodie  is specifically an item of mens designer clothing, and is rarely worn by the californian female counterparts. In the UK however, it seem that the hoodie is far more of a unisex item, being worn by both young men and women pretty equally.

The hoodie can actually be traced back as far as the middle ages, when monks would wear hooded robes as a part of their traditional catholica attire.  The more modern design of the hoodie only goes back to around the 30’s, when designers ‘Champion’ came up with the first modern hoodie design to keep workers warm in frozen warehouses in New York.

In the 1970’s the hoodies really took off as the hip hop culture developed in New York, and hoodies provided an instant means of covering one’s face, which was convenient for those with less than legal practices. The hoodies popularity also rose again significatly with its first feature length big screen debut in Rocky, glamourised by ‘the american dream’.

Then the 1990’s came and the hoodie began to receive the reputation that is has today in the UK, and became increasingly associated with the children of the lower middle class population of Britain, often referred to as ‘Chavs’. While the hoodie’s transatlantic counterpart market remained strong, as US based surfers and skateboarders adorned the hoodie  as designer clothing and made it somewhat more acceptable.

Today  hoodies are the subject of much critiscism, and in many cases have been banned from both shopping centres and night clubs. Particularly when worn simultaneously with a cap, the police see ‘hoodies as a real problem with people conceiling their identities both from cctv cameras, and victims of crime.

But is this hate justified?

The hoodie can quite accurately be associated with the lower middle class demographic, and indeed crime rates, but a fashionable item of clothing for a demographic where crime rates are higher does not indicate that the clothing being worn is the issue.
How does banning the hoodie solve any problems for this country? If hoodies did not exist, people with criminal intent would wear balaclavas, hooded jackets, or ski masks, as they have done throughout history. Yet these items are not banned because they aren’t as common.

Long ago tattoos were strongly associated with crime and antisocial behaviour, yet this stereotype too has shifted as a person is not defined by their skin, and 1 in 3 people these days have atleast one tattoo, including CEO’s of multimillion pound corporations.

So if Bill Gates walked up to Blue Water Shopping Centre in a hoodie… would they let him in?

It is unreasonable to suggest that banning hoodies will prevent crime, in the same way that it is unreasonable to suggest that banning mobile phones will prevent communication. There are hundreds of alternatives, and the problem lies at the root of the issue, not at the acessory.
